24 Random Travel Facts About Me

travel facts

Following up on the Wanderlust Tag I am sharing 24 Random Travel Facts about me. I thought it would be a nice idea to do this as well so you guys can get to know me a little more personally.

  1. I was born in a country that officially doesn’t exist any more: Yugoslavia is now dissolved into seven new countries and Bosnia is my home (but I love all of them). When the war was almost over we fled to the Netherlands.
  2. I made my first ‘solo trip’ when I was 13. I took the train from a small town in the north of Netherlands to Linz in Austria to visit my family there. In the middle of the night I missed my train in Munich, but thank God I ran into a Bosnian who helped as my German vocabulary barely extended to ”Tschuss” then.
  3. When I was 15 went to America for 2ยฝ months. I was staying at my uncle’s in cornhuster state Nebraska and visited family in the blooming Iowa. It wasn’t New York or LA, but it was a great experience and I think this is actually where my love for staying abroad for a longer time and being all local started.
  4. I actually have no idea where my wanderlust comes from. My wider family (who live all around the world) go back to Bosnia and take a holiday to the Croatian sea side and don’t really understand why I need to go to places … I am such a special snowflake.
  5. I’ve ‘only’ been to 28 countries.
  6. But … I have lived in Melbourne during a 6 month internship, experienced how it is to work in Austria during winter season, studied for a semester in a small town in Finland, worked in different places in Germany and now I am trying to make it in London.
  7. Amsterdam, LA, New Orleans, Buenos Aires and Bali are places I would love to stay for a longer time.
  8. I’ve never been to Italy and Spain, while pretty much everyone I know has been there.
  9. I speak Bosnian (or Serbo-Croatian if you want to be politically correct, but since I speak the weird dialect from my town of birth I call it Bosnian), Dutch, English and German. But I can ask where the nearest cafe is in about 10 other languages.
  10. Trains are my favourite way of travelling, they are fast, these days pretty comfortable and there is a pretty relaxed atmosphere going on (unless you are late and about to miss your connection) or deal with a carriage of rowdy drunks.
  11. I can’t pick a favourite city.
  12. I hitch-hiked once. Me and my friend were more or less forced to because the last bus from Plitvice Lakes to Zagreb was full and didn’t even stop for us. And I felt it was ok because I understood the language and I imagined worst things would happen if we did not try to get to our hostel. Our lovely drivers drove us to the entrance of the hostel and didn’t want one kuna from us.
  13. I’ve mentioned it before, but Monaco was my biggest disappointment.
  14. And Auschwitz has been the most impressive place I’ve visited.
  15. Cliff diving in Dubrovnik has been the most scary thing I’ve done.
  16. I worked at holiday park with a huge camping area, but I’ve never really been out camping myself.
  17. Until recently I used to buy key chains as souvenirs. Then I realised memories are the best keepsakes.
  18. I do still save entry tickets, booklets and other useless stuff and one day I am really going to do something with that. For real!
  19. There were two occasions where I felt unsafe, both times included me walking around in the dark and someone aggressive deciding to walk behind me and say scary things.
  20. I have missed two flights in my life, once because I missed a connecting train because my other train was late. And another time my phone turned off and I missed my alarm.
  21. My bag got stolen once. I was in Bosnia during a school break and was waiting for the bus to go to my aunt when I got distracted and gone was my bag. Boy was I happy I had insurance. And I felt kind of sorry for the guys … my bag mainly contained study books and 2/3 pieces of clothes.
  22. The weirdest food I’ve tried was crocodile and kangaroo. My roo burger tasted surprisingly good and the crocodile one tasted like chicken. Not sure I would prepare them myself, but if I run into it I wouldn’t say no.
  23. The coldest place I’ve to is Finland, I’ve seen -30ยบC on the meter…
  24. while three weeks before Finland I was in Melbourne, where it was 42 degrees. I prefer something in-between.

I tag you, you, you and anyone who wants to do it. Don’t forget to leave a link in the comments so I can read your travel facts.

  1. Love this one – Iโ€™ve โ€˜onlyโ€™ been to 28 countries. More than me !

  2. What a nice tag! I see we have some things incommon, though I haven’t travelled as much as you have. I was disappointed by Monaco, have never seen such a posh city in my life. I would love to go to Bali once and I fell in love with Rome when I visited on my first trip to a country I didn’t spoke the language of.
But my heart was stolen by Berlin, where I’ve been living for the past 1.5 years ๐Ÿ™‚

    Cheers from Berlin!

  3. Oh my gosh, wow!
This was such a fun post to get to know more about you – I really look up to how you’ve been experienced in travelling alone from such a young age. You’re amazing!
And cliff diving!! :O haha The scariest thing I’ve done is probably my skydive.

    Best wishes, Danielle.
    xo

  4. I absolutely loved this post!
You’ve had so many amazing adventures!
“I’ve ‘only’ been to 28 countries”… I’ve only been to 5, but I’m looking forward to increasing that number ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. Lovely post. I collect loads of stuff from my trips and have boxes full of tickets and leaflets from places I’ve visited. It’s nice to revisit them sometimes and think about all the happy times I’ve spent travelling places.

  6. It was really fun reading trough this post! You’ve been to a lot of places and had your first solo trip when you were 13! That’s really amazing imo. And I wonder why Monaco was your biggest disappointment, I guess I have to dig your archive :p

    xx

  7. This list is such a clever way to get to know you! Monaco also disappointed me (seems that’s not uncommon). I’d love to visit Bosnia! I’ve heard it is beautiful and the people are so friendly!
Think I’ll do a list like this soon.
Thanks for sharing this with us x

  8. My husband was also born in Yugoslavia, ha! Now he is Slovenian ๐Ÿ™‚ And the Croatian sea side thing is also pretty common here, some people don’t even phantom going somewhere else, traditions I guess. My favorite mode of transportation is also train by far! Loved knowing more about you!

  9. I save all my tickets, leaflets, and other stuff, too! When I get back from a trip and empty out my bag there’s just loads of bits of paper… But I keep them in the hopes that I’ll eventually make a scrapbook or something ๐Ÿ™‚

  10. You’ve only been to 28 countries…(!)
I’ve ONLY been to 13 countries (and all in Europe), if you include Greece were I was born!!!! But if you consider that I start travelling only 7 years ago,I feel pretty lucky visiting all those beautiful places!!!!!!!!!
I collect magnets as souvenirs and my most favourite city will always be London!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The only city I have been and didn’t like is Milan…….

  12. Some pretty amazing travel experiences you have had! I visited Croatia last summer and fell in love with the beaches there, I could happily revisit every year:)

  13. I completely agree with #10! Trains are the way to get around South Wales, where I lived for 8 years, they are so comfortable to travel in. It’s nice to be able to put your drink down on a table as you travel.. I really can’t wait to jump back onto one in 3 weeks time.
    Loved reading this tag!

  14. I love this post, I think I’m going to have to accept your tag! It seems like you’ve had very interesting and fun travels. I think I know what you mean about Monaco – it’s so tiny! x

  15. I think I’ll do this! I like travel surveys, reading them is more fun than filling them but yay.

I’d love to try crocodile and kangaroo. I’ve had camel, though. Plastic-y.
