32 Things Traveling Has Taught Me

Learned From Traveling

  • When a friend comes to your door and states you are going on a random road trip you don’t ask questions, but grab your wallet, passport, phone and a sleeping bag.
  • Travelling back home always sucks and you just want to get it over with.
  • Really do leave scans of your passports and credit cards with family as well email it to yourself.
  • Running to the other side of the train station with about 30 seconds before the train leaves proves I could easily run the 1000 meter sprint Olympics.
  • Accepting the fact you are not always in control and enjoy things as they go
  • Pack as lightly as possible! It’s really true what they say: you can always ditch things and you do buy new stuff along the way
  • Skype is amazing (expensive Wi-Fi isn’t).
  • Learning how to say thank you, excuse me and hello can open many doors.
  • Memes are an international language, global phenomenon … who hasn’t had a Star Wars Kid or Chuck Norris related conversation.
  • You might think it’s a waste of money, but do get a travel insurance.
  • Men can be assholes, just like in your home country.
  • Smartphones have changed the way we travel.
  • Boredom doesn’t really exist when you are on the road …
  • …but does in Guangzhou Airport – a really bad place for a 10 hour transit!
  • If you are not sure if your street food is safe, check the amount of people at the stand. If locals are going for it, it must be good.
  • Sometimes the internet in your top city centre hotel is €20 a day and free at your hostel in a third world country.
  • Subway sandwiches in Turkey are not like the Subway you know at home.
  • I like hostel for the social atmosphere, but occasionally a private hotel room with your own shower is worth the budget …
  • More than often, stereotypes are not exaggerated
  • Getting lost is sometimes that one thing you needed for your trip to go from good to awesome.
  • Listen to people you meet, everyone has a story worth hearing.
  • There is not wrong or right way of travelling.
  • You’ll be surprised with what you can do with instant noodles .
(okay, you can’t use them as a spare blanket…yet).
  • Earplugs are the best.
  • If your mom calls and tells you that on the news Athens seems to be on fire just mumble her you are in Randomsville. The media can exaggerate things.
  • In some places tampons aren’t easy to get.
  • It really is about the journey and not the destination.
  • It’s ok to go return to a place you love.
  • Things don’t always go as you planned.
  • Choose your traveling companions wisely because sometimes your best friend at home can be a bad travelmate.
  • Tourist destinations aren’t always a terrible thing.
  • How lucky I am with the passport I have.

  1. “In some places tampons aren’t easy to get” See this is why I love your blog. You’re so interesting but you don’t take yourself seriously, you’re just so hilarious!

  2. I love this post. Hilarious but true statements.
“Learning how to say thank you, excuse me and hello can open many doors.”
    Been there 😉
Not speaking a language fluently, doesn’t mean you can’t get any help when you need it. It is amazing how locals really want to help, when you ask for it although you did so in a very impolite way. Smiling all the time and saying ‘thank you’ in the local language, does help.

  3. •”Boredom doesn’t really exist when you are on the road …” — This is how I always feel.
    Love this post!

  4. That’s funny about mumbling about being in Randomsville when someone calls you to tell you what they heard on the news about where you are. Sometimes it’s easier than trying to convince them that you are not affected by whatever it is they heard on tv.

    Good list!

  5. Wonderful post. Some of your responses got me wondering, what are subway sandwiches like in Turkey like? What’s the difference to home . Others made me laugh so true sometimes stereotypes are true. There is not a wrong or right way to travel Lucy x

  6. Oh how I loved reading this!

Particularly the one about listening to other people, everyone has a story worth hearing. Traveling isn’t always about the sites and the tourist spots. There’s so much more to experience. I couldn’t agree with you more.

  8. ah yes, yes, so true, i have to agree with most of these 🙂 traveling is just one big journey and it´s so worth it 🙂
